At the intersection of Stribling Walk and Chapel Walk is the Mexican Monument was erected in memory of 4 passed midshipmen: H. Clemson, J.R. Hynsonm, J.W.Pillsbury, and T.B.Shubrick. Their names are on each side of the memorial. The memorial was a gift in 1848 from the Academy's Brigade of the Midshipment.
Clemson and Hynson lost their lives when the Somers sank in 1846. Pillsbury downed near Vera Cruz in 1847, while Shubrick died in the siege of Vera Cruz. All of these were during the start of the Mexican American war.
Around the monument is 4 cannons that were seized when the United States prevailed over Mexico in the Mexican American War. The cannons are all made of brass, and are named. I got 2 of the names, El Faetonte and El Neptuno, and when I got home, I didn't realize I should have gotten the other 2 names! I haven't been able to find anything about each cannon in particular which is next on my list. If you're at the Naval Academy, please drop me a line (or a picture) of the other 2 cannons! If you find out individual history of them, I'll put it up here as well!
